EcoHomes is run by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and is a method used to calculate the environmental impact of a dwelling. It works by giving the construction a performance rating that is indicated by sunflowers. These are shown in the diagram on the right.
This is a demand lead initiative is aimed at providing a credible method of house builders to demonstrate the quality of their design and consideration for the environment, the demand is caused by the rise of the ethical consumer coupled with the many advantages that Excellent properties will have:
- Reduced running cost through greater energy and water efficiency, and reduced maintenance
- Healthy, comfortable and flexibility internal environments
- Access to local amenities
- Less dependence on the car
EcoHomes assessments can be carried out at the design stage similar to a SAP calculation, each house is considered, however the rating is given for the development as a whole. The issues that are assessed include energy, water, pollution, materials, transport, ecology, land use, health and well being.
